At the age of 12, during school breaks, young Dominique Haughton would routinely sneak into forbidden areas to try to find pianos to play. Her persistence, determination, unconventional approach and passion for music would prove to be qualities that would define an unorthodox career spanning more than three decades.
Since that time, Dominique has performed a variety of solo and collaborative works in diverse settings, including the Salle Falret (Paris), the Breaza International Cultural Festival (Romania), Powers School of Music (Massachusetts), and the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her playing has been referred to as “controlled and expressive, with a nice sense of fluidity” (Dr. Alan Williams, UML) .
Initial conservatory training in France—followed by piano and mathematics studies in the United States—eventually led to an ongoing fascination with the confluence of science and music. As a result, Dominique enjoys a unique career that blends aspects of performing, teaching and mathematics.
A regular performer in live “virtual” concerts during the 2020-2021 pandemic, Dominique has presented music by composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartok; has accompanied singers and instrumentalists, and also enjoys sharing her native culture through the presentation of French popular ballads and songs.
As an academic, Dominique writes about diverse topics such as business analytics, global living standards, and music analytics (i.e., data analysis related to music problems). One recent research paper in the journal Chance (2021) examines elements and attributes of successful Kickstarter funding for rock musicians.
Dominique is a Professor Emerita of Mathematical Sciences and Global studies at Bentley University, and holds a Ph.D in Mathematics from MIT. She is a laureate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in mathematics. In May 2022, she completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Sound Recording Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, in Professor Jacob Hiser’s piano studio. She is now pursuing her piano studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot, where she has completed solfege studies, in the piano class of Paul Blacher and in the dechiffrage class of Eric Ampeau.
In her spare time, Dominique, an all-time animal lover, enjoys Vietnamese culture, street art, graphic novels. She is an active Pokémon Go player.
